The Malling™ Fruits breeding programmes at NIAB EMR concentrate on strawberries, raspberries, apples, cherries and rootstocks.

East Malling Strawberry Breeding Club

NIAB EMR’s strawberry breeding programme continues to develop new varieties – the variety Malling™ Centenary exceeded 70 million plant sales in 2020. Since 2008 the breeding programme has been funded via the East Malling Strawberry Breeding Club (EMSBC) which currently consists of investment from both public and private companies.  The programme aims to continue to deliver new, improved varieties to meet and counter the challenges of production.

East Malling Rubus Breeding Consortium

NIAB EMR leads an international consortium - East Malling Rubus Breeding Consortium (EMRBC) - to breed, develop and commercialise raspberries and blackberries for global production. The partnership formed in 2015 between NIAB EMR and its industry partners.
